Gold Needles

Hi everyone. I've been to Shepard's Bush here in Ogden a lot lately. I've over-heard bits of conversations about gold needles. What's the deal with gold or gold plated needles? I did a search here and found someone said the eyes break often. Thanks for the info!

I have never used a gold needle, and have never seen the advantage in using one. I have also heard that they break easier than the standard. Why pay more for the same thing? I will be interested in other stitchers' opinions on this.

I have used gold plated needles and yes the eye can break more quickly than the silver type, but I have only had one break on me and I have been using them for a few years now. Also they slide through the material a lot easier. Go to top

I tried gold needles and threw them out. Besides the eye breaking off, I would have the problem of the whole needle snapping in two. I also did not like the feel of the needle as it passed through the fabric. Felt rough to me, not smooth. Go to top

I like using the gold needles on 20ct to 28 ct projects as the needles work well though I won't use them in traveling cross stitch kits i do as they do have a tendency to break as the worst times. Been left in a waiting room or some where without a needle a couple of times and nothing to do. Kind of frustrating. Go to top

I have stitched with gold needles too, and tossed them in the trash. I didn't like the way they feel. There is resistance that you don't feel with the silver ones. Go to top

I bought some gold needles and discovered that over time the plating reacted to my hands and the gold came off. Now, I don't bother spending the extra for gold needles. Happy Stitching! Go to top

I am allergic to the silver needles, a major nuisance since I have been stitching for years. The skin on my stitching fingers peels terribly and sometimes the skin also breaks down and open making it extremely difficult to stitch since my fingers stick to the thread, fabric, etc. The only relief I get is using the gold plated needles, though over time as stated the plating wears off. Someone else gave me the idea of coating the needle with clear nail polish but to do this effectively you need the smallest, thinnest needle or it sticks to the fabric when you try to pull it through. I buy them when I have an extra coupon from the craft store (usually 40-50% off).
I see no difference. Mine have never broken. But if I do drop it, I can find it a bit easier. I just feel special when I embroider with it. Go to top
