I have a pattern which calls for 28 count linen. I have 18 count aida fabric and wondered if I could use this instead. I realize that the dimensions will be different, but can I use the 18 count.

YES you can. You are correct size will be different. The onnly thing to be concerned about are specialty stitches, most are difficult to work on aida cloth of any size because of their make up. Go to top

Remember that you can use 14 count fabric over one thread and you'll end up with the same dimensions. I use what I have whether it's the same color or count, just do what you like! Go to top

So does that mean I can take a pattern done on 18 or 16 ct and use 14 ct instead. I have never used the 18 or 16 and don't really know how to use it. There is nobody that I know who can teach me. Would the dimensions be the same. Go to top

You can use any count of fabric for any design. The dimensions will be different that's all. If you stick to aida you divide either 11 (for 11 count), 14 (for 14 count), 16 (for 16) count, 18 for (18 count) and 22 for (22 count Hardanger fabric). So if your design is let us say 70 stitches up and down and 70 stitches across and you are using 14 count aida you design will be 5" x 5" or if you are using metric 13cm square. 11 count aida sometimes needs more thread coverage so perhaps 3 ply of floss would be better. 14 and 16 use 2 ply of floss most often. Now with 18 count you can use either 2 ply or 1 ply of floss. The 22 count Hardanger fabric would look best with 1 ply of floss. Leisure Arts has a wonderful beginning chart book that would answer all your questions and I highly recommend getting a hold of that book. It is called Cross Stitch for Beginners #2072. It is the ONLY cross stitch instruction book you will ever need. Go to top
