Sad news about Dimensions

Just read that Dimensions is closing its factory in PA at the end of the year. Is this the only one that makes kits, x-stitch books, etc.? If so, how sad! It breaks my heart that counted cross
stitch is dying--so many shops have closed.

I don't think cross stitch is "dying".
There are thousands of designers and companies still around.

I emailed them and will let you know what they say.
They may have othe facilities that make stitching products.

There site is showing their new products. Go to top

Yes, there are a lot of designers/online x-stitch shops, but there have been many changes in the last few years: brick & mortar stores closing (only two left in the big metro area where I
live); stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels drastically reducing their selection of x-stitch books/supplies (Walmart even stopped selling DMC); magazine racks in bookstores, etc. having
hardly any (if any at all) x-stitch magazines; online shops currently offering very generous sales to keep business going and expanding to include other crafts (scrapbooking, stamping,
etc.). I hope there aren't other x-stitch casualties like Dimensions, and I'm thankful that I have a stash of charts, fabric, and floss to last a lifetime. Go to top

You are correct about that. No more at Walmart. The only place left close enough to me is JoAnn's and Michaels. And like you said, they have downsized. I have been lucky at thrift stores. I also have enough for more than my lifetime. But, why then do I still get more? Go to top

I believe this was discussed before on another board. People said that Dimensions was just closing that factory. They still were going to be in the business but at a different location. Why not contact the company and ask what is happening? Go to top

I have to add to this discussion regarding cross stitch. We used to have a cross stitch shop downtown, which is now, sadly gone. And the two closest Walmarts to me (equidistant), one carries limited sewing items, the other none at all. AC Moore has cut back on its cross stitch kits/supplies, as has Michaels. For the kit that I asked about earlier, I had to purchase on JoAnn.com. How sad, this is such an enjoyable hobby. Go to top

I think what can be happening with the decrease of stitching supplies in chain stores is that someone in a corner corporate office has decided that stitching isn't "in" anymore and have jumped on the knitting, beading and scrapbooking bandwagon. About 3 years ago the near to me Michaels (a 10 min. walk away from my house) revamped the store and nearly killed off the cross stitch department. What good is a 40% or 50% off coupon when there is nothing to buy? We recently met the manager and voiced our unhappiness with the situation. She doesn't shop in the store either for her stitching supplies. She travels all the way to Toronto to Gitta's. Go to top

I agree. Cross Stitching is an enjoyable hobby. My micheals store has a limited supply of cross stitching projects as well. I've been looking on line for stores and ebay for cross stitching stuff. :) Go to top

I've been hearing for a while about Dimensions and it really is sad. I am lucky enough to have a wonderful independent shop close to where I live plus how would we ever live without the places online.
Is cross stitch interest decreasing everywhere? I know scrapbooking is huge now and the cross stitch sections keep shrinking! Go to top

So sad about Dimensions, They have some great patterns and ideas. ALthough I am really spoiled to live about 20 minutes from Herschnerr's , so with warehouse sales I probably have enough stitching supplies for about 5 lifetimes.
