Edith, you can check this conversion chart for the numbers and see if the color matches with the description. Seems that Madeira and J&P are the ones with mostly 4 digit numbers.

You could also check the conversion chart on this site where you could search for the number and see if anything pops up.................good luck, Diane Go to top

        Edith,
You might consider buying a DMC color card with the actual floss samples in it. I've had this card for years and it's been great matching flosses from kits.

DMC does not make the Floss Card with the actual floss samples in it any longer. They do make a Color Card. My suggestion would be for anyone who has floss that is not known as to brand and/or color name, to use it for any cross stitch chart that seems to be appropriate for the design. So many stitchers (per this message board anyway) are "afraid" to experiment or use their own judgement in using fabric and/or floss other than what is listed by the designer. The designer cannot possibly satisfy every stitcher regarding what they like! And many designers encourage creativity in stitching their designs. Go to top

On a side note, you CAN purchase a DMC color chart with actual thread samples directly trough DMC- check out dmc.com. It is not available through retailers anymore; however it can be purchased through the site. I found out the hard way when I was looking for one as well... Go to top

I have a few yards of "Galaxy" floss made in Thailand for Lily Craft Products/B. Blumenthal & Co., Inc. in Carlstandt,N.J. and the numbers are 237 which can be used for DMC 3348 and 277 which can be used for 745. I also have some J & P Coats with numbers 4086 and 6253 for example. I wonder if the floss you have been given was the floss that was used in the kits put out by the Creative Circle. They used to do home parties. Mady, who has a gallery here, use to sell Creative Circle kits. Contact her here thru her gallery Go to top

Just saw a pattern from the UK Cross Stitcher magazine. They list some charts with Maderia floss. Maderia is from Germany. Many of the floss numbers are in the 2000 range. Perhaps the floss you were givenis Maderia??? Go to top

Hi. Just a suggestion and you might have done it already. There's a Floss Chekclist on the left side of this screen. And it gives a few brands. Maybe you can compare your numbers with ones on those lists.
