Hi Judy, Pamn here (again). Please excuse the brain cramp. The website I found which seems to be the best was: www.stitchesnthings.com/GASTtoDMC.html. Just in case you need more conversions.

Live long and prosper, Pamn.

Hi, Pamn. I'm looking for a chart for Clark's Boilfast. Any ideas? I have some old, slightly faded DMC 798 that I have been using for a project that I started many, many years ago and I don't have enough to finish the project. The new thread is slightly darker and there are enough stitches together that the difference is noticeable. I'm checking thrift stores, Goodwill, etc, trying to find some that matches. I have found other brands, but none are close enough. Problem is that I don't know what number to look for and I keep buying the wrong ones. So now I have a lot of similar blues from different brands that I will probably never use. I have the conversions for J&P and Anchor but nothing else. Go to top

Hi Darla, Pamn here. I'm afraid I'm not going to make you very happy. I tried google and everywhere else I could think of and came up empty as far as a color chart for Clark's Boilfast goes. I even went on J.P. Coats' website (for Coats and Clark). I do not think you are going to be able to match your DMC 798 with another brand. Not even close. (It's because the dye recipes are proprietary and closely guarded.)
If you have any of your old stuff left at all, you could try using a strand of the "old 798" with the "new 798" and do this to "ease into using solely the new."
If you are slap out of your old DMC 798, you may have to bite the bullet and frog (rip out) the old 798 in the section where you ran out and restitch with the new 798. I say is as opposed to removing every single solitary stitch of old 798 out of the entire project. I have had to do this several times myself. The newly stitched areas don't match, exactly, the older stitched areas. But...it isn't too terribly noticible if you don't have to change dye lots in the middle of a section. It really doesn't look too bad. I have a heck of a lot of floss that goes way back (the early 70's). I was just beginning to stitch and decided it would behoove me to acquire a complete set of DMC. I would prowl the stitchery departments of stores and the local LNS's in search of "clearance sales". A large department store here closed down itsd needlework department and that's where I obtained most of my stash. (By the way, I have used up all my old 798 or I would send it to you. In the event I come across any in any of my ongoing projects, I'll let you know. Most of my "stash" of DMC is "old" or "vintage" as they say now. Looking back, I bet that the floss in those days costed less than the "clearance" price today. Oh, I am getting too vintage, myself.
I fear I haven't helpled you out too much and I am so sorry. Do let mw know if any of my suggestions did indeed help.

        Pamn-
Thanks for taking so much time to help me! I also tried googling and didn't come up with anything. I didn't think about J&P though. I do have some old thread left, but not much, and I have been mixing it with the new. It's not quite as noticeable, but I can still see a difference in the sunlight. I guess I'll just have to hang this someplace dark! :) I don't want to take out the old as it is a very large section and it took me a very, very long time to do it (I have already spent over 100 hours on this project, but not all of that was spent on the blue). The pattern is large (for me) and the blue is more than half of the stitches. I had enough when I started (about 30 years ago), then the project was set aside for other things. I used the 798 in many other projects (it is one of my favorite colors)so of course, I used too much and now I don't have enough to finish this one. I guess I'll just keep looking in thrift stores for old thread. I did find a small amount in a kit not long ago. Thanks again for all of your help, I really appreciate it! Go to top

I have two skeins of the DMC 798 in my stash. I know that they are vintage because they don't have a UPC bar code on them. I probably got them rom my mother's stashand she has been gone for almost twenty years. I wouldn't be surprised if she got them from a friend who dies several years before that. I would be delighted to send them if there is a legal way to do that. Go to top

Wow, Nancye-you have no idea how much I would appreciate that! I don't know why it would be illegal, it's not a pattern, just some thread. You can email me at darlamwade@gmail.com for my address. If there's anything you need (I have all of the DMC colors except the new ones) I would gladly trade you for them. I'm currently unemployed so I can't pay you. I really would love to get this project finished. It's been waiting long enough! :) Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you, Nancye! I got the thread and looks like a perfect match! I won't know for sure until I do some stitches with it next to the other, but I think it will work! I'm so excited! Go to top
