DMC uses letter with some of their floss-S for satin, V for variegated. I have some very old floss from J & P Coates that has letters and numbers. I also have some old floss from The American Thread company-brand name, Star-that has letters and numbers. These have the brand names on the same label as the numbers, though, so they may not be what you have. You probably have some generic brand that came in a package so the brand name is on the package, not the individual color labels. Be careful with it. Definitely treat it for colorfastness before using it. Go to top

J & P used to sell floss already wound on cardboard bobbins. They had a part at the top of the bobbin with the brand name, a hole (for the store to hang them on pegs)and other info that you could tear off after you bought it. They're the only ones that I know of that did that. Go to top

I have some old J.&P. Coats floss that have double digit numbers for colors. When you look on the conversion charts there is no conversion for them. there is some things that I do to try and find the DMC color. You can go to your local store that sales floss and match up that way or DMC does put out a conversion chart that gives a sample of their floss so that you can match that way. Good luck in finding your matching DMC colors. Go to top
