Project Rotation

Hi Everyone: I have been cross stitching many years (about 20 yrs) and would like to know what rotation methods you all use and find most effective. Several years ago I read somewhere to have lots of projects going to finish lots of projects. I'm sorry I listened to this advice since in order to finish them all you need LOTS AND LOTS OF TIME to work on them especially the larger projects. I have many projects in progress and would really like to condense my 3 to 4 packed canvas bags of projects in progress, any suggestions? I tried to search the message boards here since I visit this site daily but did not see much about this. Right now I'm just using closest to the finish line for a few projects out of the masses. Thanks.

A while ago, I reached in and pulled out a number of unfinished stitching projects. I just grabbed one and started stitching. Then I grabbed again and got another one completed. I rewarded myself with a new start and finish. Go to top

The best way is to take one project at a time. I have to force myself to keep to this since I also have more than several "in progress". Usually though, I go back and forth between two projects. Just remember, there is no right or wrong way, just what "tickles your fancy". Go to top

Hello Lynn. Pamn Ravenscroft here. My middle name is Lynne--we are both "waterfalls, or cascades". I seldom make New Years Resolutions, but one year I did:
I will only finish UFO's this year, not start any new projects. If I have a quick project to do for some reason, it may not take more than 6 hours from start to finish.
(I think I had one quickie to do.) I stuck by that and felt extremely self righteous because of it. Oh, I bought new patterns---I mean, what if they went out of print before I could get to them? Horrors! I did get a lot done that year, but haven't done it since. Usually, I have a complex pattern, a simple pattern, and a "pattern for me" in rotation. This keeps me from getting bored (I'm a gemini) or overwhelmed (I was born in the Year of the Ox). Like the lady said, there is no "right way", just your way. Sometimes what you think will work, just won't work for you. When looking for a way to rotate, try to "think outside of the box". That's the best advice I could give. Keep calm and carry on.
Live long and prosper, Pamn Go to top

    Hi Lynn,

I too used to only do one project at a time then I found the 123 Message Board and just knew I had to do more projects at a time. Well I ended up doing four and I would do them in a weekly rotation but doing it that way seemed like nothing ever go finished. I now have things more under control and come the first of the year I will be going back to one main project at a time. I'm sure I'll stop along the way and do a small project here or there for whatever reason but I'll be starting the new year doing only one project, and that is one I've been working on for over two years already, well not two years of total stitching time but two years since I started it. As several others have said you need to do what works best for you and if working on one project is what works then go for it. Enjoy your day and happy stitching, Judy :) Go to top

Thanks so much for all your replies. I was just curious what rotation methods other stitchers use to complete a large number of projects. I rarely post on message boards, though I visit here daily to look at the wonderful galleries to give me inspiration. I'm still open to hearing other suggestions and may use a mix of your ideas to add spice. I have been stitching a focus piece for the last few months that required mostly confetti stitches throughout. Even though it is not the largest project, I felt burnt out and it felt enormous in size because of this. It's a gift for a friend and I must get through it. Luckily and thankfully I am now nearly at the finish line on this one and hope it should be complete in 1 or 2 more stitching sessions. Go to top

I usually do one "big" project a year (9"x11") or bigger. I try to make the same project, for example, breast cancer awareness ribbons, for family all at the same time. I most likely do one project every six weeks...it all depends on your speed and patience.... Go to top
