converting cross stitch to needlepoint

Has anyone here ever used a cross stitch pattern for needlepoint? I have chart for a William Morris pattern, and I'd like to do it in needlepoint to make a decorative pillow for my bed. I tried using 6 or 9 plies of floss on needlepoint canvas so that I could use the color chart, but it doesn't seem to work very well. I've been studying the tapestry wool selection on the Herrschner's site, and if I go with tapestry wool, I'd like to get corresponding colors since the design is so complicated. Do the color names, e.g., "steel gray" in DMC vs. "steel gray" in DMC tapestry wool, correspond with each other - are they pretty close to the same color?

What size needlepoint canvas are you using? You get fairly decent coverage with 3 - 4 ply of floss on 18 count canvas. You could also try #5 perle cotton. As far as I know DMC goes by numbers on their products not a name. Most names are from different people and how they see colours. You may call one colour deep rose and the next person may call it medium peony. Go to top

This is 14-ct, the same as 14-ct Aida. The name I used as an example, Steel Gray, is the one DMC uses to describe the color #318. They name all their colors, as well as numbering them. Go to top
