Can I add aida to a project that I'm short a few rows to finish project?

I started a cross stitch stocking and thought I had it all counted out right. Am almost half way done. I'm am going to be a few rows short on the bottom. Can I add aida to make this longer. Just work through both pieces? It will all be covered with stiches and when done will be sewed right up to the stitches so no blank aida will be seen. I was thinking I could just put a piece of aida over a few rows and work through both! Any ideas? Thanks for any help on this.

I have not been successful doing that - but I'm pretty picky too. I would look at the pattern and see if there are places I could omit a row here and there so it would fit. It you have background spots that don't interfere with the design, that will work. I've done it a few times... Go to top

Rather than stitching through 2 thicknesses of aida you can "butt" two pieces of fabric. You do all the stitching to near the short end. Leave about 7 rows bare. Then on another piece of fabric, leaving at least 7 rows bare at the top stitch the remaining rows. Then when everything is done you sew together the two pieces. I would hand sew using a back stitch. Once this is done, you can trim those bare rows a bit. I'd seal them with a bead of Fraycheck. Also when you frame the piece get them to use a low loft quilt bat on top of the mat board. The batting will absorb some of the seam. Also make certain that one bare section of aida is folded up and the other folded down. This will decrease the bulk. Kingsland Samplers years ago did a number of samplers in this way. Good Luck Go to top
