Confussed about thread

Hi,

Im a bit confussed about thread.

My aunty taught me how do cross stitch and she told me that i should always use DMC thread.

There is a little stitching shop near my home and they sell Goodwear thread. When im stitching from charts out of books and magazines is it ok for me to match the colours up and use the Goodwear insted of DMC. Goodwear keys are not included in the magazines or books.

Thanks

Jade, 17 Wales

    Jade,
I have always used DMC floss for my stitching needs and prefer this floss. However, you can use whatever floss you would like as long as you are willing to match the colors from the design to the other brand of floss. Keep in mind that not all flosses are created equal since more inexpensive brands may not cover as well or may get tangled more easily.

DMC seems to be the best floss and most of your patterns use DMC colors. You can find conversions charts that will match DMC colors to other brands. I have never heard of "Goodwear". I will do some research and see if I can find a conversion chart. If you think you can find colors that are close to the DMC colors that it is call for, there is no reason why you can't use them. If it a laarge piece and calls for many shades of colors, it would be hard to get that many colors of another brand to match up so it looks decent. If it is a small design and not a lot of shading, it should work oksy. Go to top

Here is the contact info for the Goodwear company. Do you live in the US? They have a toll free number. If you are outside the US, I can call them for you. Ask if they have a conversion chart for their thread to DMC.

I sent them an email today about a conversion chart. By the time I remember to call it is always too late. Go to top

I have never heard of Goodwear. I have tryed different brands but I always come back to DMC. I love the quality and colors. There are no fast rules, however. Using what is easily at hand takes some stress out and after all stitching should be fun. Just be sure that what you use is colorfast. Reds and dark colors are the most likely to run. I'd run hot water over a small piece of the floss to make sure. I Hope this helps- Judi Go to top
