width of bookmarks

This year I'm joining in with a friend to make bookmarks for an adult literacy program. I've made a few bookmarks before, but not "seriously". What's the normal width for a cross stitched bookmark? And does anyone do anything special about hiding the backside?

Thanks!

    Barbara,
As for the width of bookmarks, the crochet edged bookmarks are about 2" wide while the Ribband 14ct and 18ct are about 1 1/2" wide. I don't put anything on the backs of the bookmarks when I've stitched them using the above material since I try to make my backs as neat as possible. Go to top

    Barbara,
I usually make my bookmarks 1.5-2.0" wide and 6-7" long. I don't use pre-made ones with lace edging. I turn 1/2" edge to the back on all sides and then attach a piece of grosgrain ribbon with an iron-on fusible web (I use "Stitch Witchery"). I use a piece of ribbon slightly longer than the bookmark and cut a 'V' into each end. You can also buy self-adhesive felt squares and cut a piece the size of the bookmark. Then just adhere it to the back.

My stitching is never so neat that I want to expose the back. The gallery of 'backs' on this site make me very jealous. Go to top

So when making these bookmarks, can you use a sewing machine and sew fabric to the back instead of using a fusible webbing? I figure it would look ok as long as the edges are turned as you say 1/2" before the fabric is sewed on.

I'm getting ready to do this and want to make sure I'm not messing up.

Sure. One way is to allow double the width, plus seam allowance when you cut your fabric. Center the bookmark. Sew the back seams, right sides together. Turn. And then fringe the ends by removing about 4 rows of threads from the fabric.

This allows you to stitch on the back side also... a good place to stitch a name and date. Go to top

Thank you Anita and Annie! I also found a wealth of information online (and at this site, of course). I'm ready to stitch! Go to top
