Where to Start

I was wondering about this month's poll. How would you start your design anywhere other than the center? I mean besides the obvious of counting. That's a lot of counting just to start at the top. I wouldn't mine doing so if I could find a good way to figure that out. Thanks for your input!

I have a friend that cuts out a piece of paper(brown paper or wrapping paper - anything large enough) the size of the project and lays it on her fabric. Then she marks with a pin or needle the corners and starts at whichever one she wants. I start at the upper left hand corner and she starts at the lower left hand corner. That way you make sure that you have enough fabric for the project and eliminates counting to the edge. Works for me.

If you have a fair distance to count up from the centre to where you need to start at the top; you can put a pin in after every 10 spaces. If working with aida cloth, after you have counted ten make the hole at the base of the aida block a bit larger with your needles. Then it's a bit easier to count in groups of ten Go to top

I like to start top centre and it doesn't take long to work out. if you fold your fabric in quarter to find centre top. I find it is better to do this as your hand doesn't come into contact with the floss and so it keeps cleaner Go to top

What about using one of those rulers by E.G.MFG. that lists measurement for 14 marks per inch, 11 marks per inch, 22 makrs per inch, and 18 marks per inch? Go to top

I start at the top center. If you cut your fabric 3 or 4 inches bigger on all sides than your project piece. Fold your fabric length wise there is the center. measure 3 inches down there is here you start. Go to top
