Fibres Showing Through Other Colours

This is my third project ever and I'm having a problem with switching colours. Right now, I'm using a teal colour and black. I'm noticing that sometimes I can see some black fibres in with the teal and...well, it doesn't look good. I'm wondering if maybe I'm not switching between the colours properly?

The way I've been doing it is, starting on one side, I swap needles each time time the colour changes (I keep them both threaded the whole time). So I go black, teal, black, teal, etc. Then when I get to the end, I go back with each colour, again swapping every time it changes. Is the way I'm doing this causing me to pull through some of the black fibres when I go back with the teal or...? I can't figure out why this is happening.

Thank you so much for your help!
