Have no numbers for my thread

So I got a lot of thread from my grandmother, when I started to organize them all, I didn't get to write the numbers of the thread down.
So now I have a lot of thread without numbers.
I want to know if there is a way for me to get them back or anything? Is this a lost case with thread without numbers?

I had a friend who did this too. She knew it was DMC so I would take a few skeins to the store and match them that way. Go to top

I frequently change the suggested floss colors. I have a glass jar where I have been keeping my UFNs (unidentified floss numbers) I use those threads when color doesn't matter. Example: Recently I did a square with a mitten. More than a dozen of us participated to be made into a quilt top. Each square had an identically outline of the mitten. Inside were frogs, trees, flowers, snowmen, etc. I made my own patchwork stitching. It came out very cute. Used up a lot of odds and ends. Go to top
