HELP! New to Aida cloth.... Is this right?

I'm new to using Aida cloth for counted cross stitch. I'm currently working on a piece called "Stained Glass Cross." While I'm finding the Aida cloth easy to use I have a question. Is it normal for the width weave to not match the height weave? For me the vertical arms of the cross and the horizontal arms have the same number of stitches but the vertical arm is "skinnier." I've counted and recounted 5 times. The counts are correct but they aren't the same size. Is this typical or do I have bad cloth?

The squares on the cloth should be the same size width wise as length wise. I have used Charles Craft cloth with excellent results. Only my experience, but I have found that fabric in kits to be frequently sub par not to mention cut too small. Another brand I have found to not be perfectly square is MCG Textiles.
