Needle sizes

Can someone tell me what is the best # needle size to use for doing counted cross-stitch on 14 count white Aida cloth? Some needles I have, the tip is too round which makes it hard to poke through the hole when other stitches are there, and the eye is too large, so it drags through the hole, causing me to really pull it which results in pain in my poor arthritic thumb! For other needles where the eye is much smaller and slides through better, the tip is too sharp and I am forever trying to bring the needle up through the fabric in just the right spot. Any suggestions? Thanks so very much!

The ‘rule of thumb’ I work to is that if the fabric is 1x count Aida (where ‘x’ is 4, 6 or 8) then I would use a 2x needle. So for 18 count Aida I would use a 28 size needle. I used a 24 size needle on 18 count Aida and it made the holes in the fabric very large; a size 28 needle is perfect. Go to top
