Pattern directions I don’t understand

I am making a Christmas stocking & several places on my pattern I have these directions:
\ to indicate I’m going to outline stitch a diagonal stitch across the square-but underneath they have a color — say x=dark green. So it has x\. So it appears they want me to stitch from the bottom left to the midpoint of the diagonal outline stitch?? There is no stitch color in the top right of the diagonal line. Help! Do you think it is just a mistake that they have that thread color in there?
