What size PVC frame?

I haven't done any cross stitch in years, but I'm about to tackle a large project (about 20"x20" on 18ct Aida). I've always used hoops in the past, but while brushing up I saw the PVC frames and they look really nice.

Can I use a smaller frame than my fabric size and move the project around like I did with hoops or do I need it to be big enough for the whole stitching area? I'm planning to make my own that I can eventually turn into a stand frame (in cramped quarters right now, no room for that for a few months)

Thanks for any help, I'm hoping to get started tomorrow.

    Yes you can use a smaller Q-snap and move it around. I like mine Go to top
