I would like to x stitch on some shirts for gifts for my kids , but I've never done so before. I would apperciate any tips. Do you start and end the same way you normally do? Do you need to put a stabilizer behind the project? Help please, lol.
Thank you.

I've never done that before either but I do believe that if you stitch on say and T-shirt or sweatshirt you would use perforated paper. It's got the holes in it like Aida and when you finished you get it wet and remove the paper from the stitches. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Good luck! Go to top

You use waste canvas not perforated paper at least that's what I use. Make sure the canvas is basted all around and I also put a big x fro corner to corner. When finished I find it a lot easier to pull the canvas out with a tweezer. If the material you are putting it on is thing use a piece of Pelom on the inside of the shirt. Go to top

Don't make it soaking wet either. It works much better to pull out the threads if you use a spray bottle for your water. Pull out all the threads in one direction first, then the other. Also here is where you can use masking tape around the edges of the waste canvas so your threads don't catch as you sew. Estelle's hint about some backing material is good, especially on finer fabrics. Now what helps all this too is to use an embroidery needle with a sharp end. You are piercing the fabric rather than going in between threads and a sharp needle works better. Go to top

This is all great advise, thank you. My last question on the the subject before i try my hand at this is, do you need to knot your thred for starting and ending, since these will go thru the wash, or is there a better way to secure the threads?
            Thanks again. Go to top

No don't knot your threads. Go under 6 or 7 uprights on the back. If you use the loop method of starting, you'll have to problem. When you go to finish off a thread, go under 3 uprights then go around one and then under 2 or 3 more uprights. That will hold like nobody's business in the wash. I did sweats for myself years ago and they were washed and washed and washed. A good book for you with lots of information is Cross Stitch for Beginners from Leisure Arts. It has all sorts of wonderful information about all you would want to know about stitching and some good patterns too. I wish it was the first beginners book I bought. It's the BEST. Go to top

The line shoud read " you'll have no problem"; not "you'll have to problem". Some days I can't type let alone stitch. Go to top
