I've done several small cross stitch projects, but, have never filled in the background with stitching, my question is: Are you supposed to fill in the whole cloth, just the picture itself or is it up to the individual? My projects are all the small type, cards, small ornaments, etc.
Thank you for input.

Anna,
Many of the large charts indicate that much of the fabric is to be covered. In some cases, this background adds to the design; in others, I think it detracts from the overall piece. However, with smaller projects, there is very little or no background. I like the main subject to stand out without all the "extras." If the chart has "background," decide for yourself if it adds to the picture; if not, leave it off.

Thanks Mary for the down to earth advice, I agree about the small ones, when I look at the design in the center finished, adding background would make it look too busy.
Love this site.
