Using the Fabric Size Calculator

The Fabric Size Calculator was designed to simplify many of the tasks encountered when finishing cross stitch projects. One very common problem encountered is determining the exact size to cut a piece of fabric in order to add a uniform border around the pattern. To use the Fabric Size Calculator to quickly find these values, simply do the following:

  1. Click here to open the Fabric Size Calculator.
  2. Enter the pattern width and height into the Pattern Size boxes.
  3. Enter the amount of space you want around the pattern into the Matte box.
  4. Click the Calculate button.

The calculator will display the fabric size required for cloth counts ranging in size from 11 to 32. Find the Cloth Count in the chart corresponding to the count used for the pattern. The size fabric required for that count size is located under the Frame column for that row.

For example, to add a 3/4 inch border to a pattern that is 50 wide and 35 high, the calculator generates the following results.

Cloth Count Fabric Frame
Width (in) Height (in) Width (in) Height (in)
11 4 1/2 3 5 1/4 3 7/8
14 3 9/16 2 1/2 4 1/4 3 3/16
16 3 1/8 2 3/16 3 13/16 2 7/8
18 2 3/4 1 15/16 3 7/16 2 5/8
22 2 1/4 1 1/2 2 15/16 2 1/4
25 2 1 3/8 2 11/16 2
28 1 3/4 1 1/4 2 7/16 1 15/16
32 1 1/2 1 2 1/4 1 3/4

If you wanted to use 22 count cloth, your total cloth size required would be 2 15/16 inches Wide by 2 1/4 inches High. The dimensions under the Fabric column are represent the area for the actual pattern region.
